Quizmaster has recently been informed that Dino'z Sports Bar has recently changed ownership. Former owner Gregg Pawelski sold the establishment to Andy Peterson on Monday January 23rd, 2012 and the bar will be undergoing some changes.

While such changes take place, including a change of name to "Spitfires Pub," the bar will put it's quiz night on hiatus. Quizmaster intends for trivia to return to the location, pending the approval of the new ownership. We will get in touch with them in early February (having given them a few weeks to settle in) and post any necessary announcements here.

Annie Edson Taylor
In 1903, the 63-year-old was the first person
to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel and survive!

Annie Edson Taylor (October 24, 1838 – April 29, 1921) was an American adventurer who, on her 63rd birthday, October 24, 1901, became the first person to survive a trip over Niagara Falls in a barrel.

In October 1829, Sam Patch, who called himself "the Yankee Leapster", jumped from a high tower into the gorge below the falls and survived; this began a long tradition of daredevils trying to go over the falls. On October 24, 1901, 63-year-old Michigan school teacher Annie Edson Taylor was the first person to go over the falls in a barrel as a publicity stunt; she survived, bleeding, but virtually unharmed. Soon after exiting the barrel, she said, "No one ought ever do that again."

Previous to Taylor's own attempt, on October 19 a domestic cat named Iagara was sent over the Horseshoe Falls in her barrel to test its strength. Contrary to rumours at the time, the cat survived the plunge unharmed and later was posed with Taylor in photographs. Since Taylor's historic ride, 14 other people have intentionally gone over the falls in or on a device, despite her advice. Some have survived unharmed, but others have drowned or been severely injured. Survivors of such stunts face charges and stiff fines, as it is illegal, on both sides of the border, to attempt to go over the falls.

George Kelley Barnes
Best known by his nickname "Machine Gun Kelly,"
he spent 17 years as an inmate at Alcatraz

George Kelley Barnes (July 18, 1895 – July 18, 1954), better known as "Machine Gun Kelly", was an American gangster during the prohibition era. His nickname came from his favorite weapon, a Thompson submachine gun. His most famous crime was the kidnapping of oil tycoon & businessman Charles Urschel in July 1933 for which he, and his gang, earned $200,000 ransom. The FBI investigation eventually led to Kelly's arrest in Memphis, Tennessee on September 26, 1933. His crimes also included bootlegging and armed robbery.

Machine Gun Kelly spent his remaining 21 years in prison. During his time at Alcatraz he got the nickname "Pop Gun Kelly." This was in reference, according to a former prisoner, to the fact that Kelly was a model prisoner and was nowhere near the tough, brutal gangster his wife made him out to be. He spent 17 years on Alcatraz, working in the prison industries, and was quietly transferred back to Leavenworth in 1951. He died of a heart attack at Leavenworth Federal Prison, Kansas on July 18, 1954, his 59th birthday. He is buried at Cottondale Texas Cemetery with a small headstone marked "George B. Kelley 1954".

How the league works
Team scores over a predetermined number of weeks are accumulated in a table. The team with the highest cumulative score at the end of that period is crowned league champions and also wins an additional prize for its efforts.

Leagues vary in length, anywhere between 4-8 weeks. Each venue's league is independent of the next, as are the league prizes.

Your Team Name
During the league season it is advised that teams keep a consistent name from week-to-week in order for the Quizmaster to track scores. Teams playing under different names each week during a league will have their scores tallied separately.

Bye Weeks
Allowing flexibility, each venue grants so many bye weeks during its league. Under this rule, a team is allowed to miss so many weeks knowing they can still compete in the league. In the event that a team is present for the entire duration of the league their weakest scores are subtracted...

For example, over the course of an eight week league all team's are granted two bye weeks. If they miss two weeks they effectively score zero in their absence - but all team's will be judged on their six best results from the eight weeks of league play.

*Overall Score vs "Best Score"
The league table indicates each team's overall score and best score. Ultimately, the best score is all that matters as this score accounts for the bye week(s) allowed in the league. In some cases the overall score and best score may be the same depending on whether that team has missed a week (or more) of play.
